Updates on Recent News / March 10th 2020

Australia, together with most of the world, continues to experience a number of unforeseen influences which require constant monitoring and regular revision. At Sellanes Clark, we always endeavour to provide the most up-to-date information available, hence this progress update:

Corona virus COVID 19 Travel Restrictions Extended

It’s very difficult to look at today’s news without being confronted with disturbing information concerning COVID 19. The Corona virus has now extended far beyond its origins in China, infecting victims in almost every country around the globe and mercilessly undermining the world’s economies.

In addition to mainland China, on March 1st Australia added Iran to its list of countries subject to travel restrictions and on March 5th, The Republic of Korea. Foreign nationals who have been in, or travelled through these countries will not be permitted to enter Australia for a period of 14 days from the time that they left or transited through.

Any intended travellers from these countries, who present at airports, will not be allowed to board their flights. Any who do arrive will be subject to visa cancellation.

Australian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family members travelling from or through these countries will be allowed into enter Australia but will be required to undertake 14 days of monitored self-isolation at home.

Travellers from Italy will be subject to significantly increased border health screening processes. Corona virus has taken a firm foothold in Italy so it appears quite possible that it may become the next country on the restricted list.

Working Holiday Visa Holders and Bushfire Recovery

Australia’s summer of devastating bushfires made news around the world. Hundreds of properties were destroyed, lives lost, fauna decimated and bushland turned to charcoal.

On March 4th 2020 the government introduced two legislative instruments relating to “Working Holiday Maker” visa Subclasses 417 and 462.

The ongoing purpose of these instruments will be to include bushfire recovery/rebuilding work as justification for second and third Working Holiday visas, noting that qualifying bushfire recovery/rebuilding work must be undertaken in specified local government regional areas which were affected by bushfires occurring after July 31st 2019 and before March 1st 2020.
