IMMIGRATION NEWS – ACT Critical Skills List

Table of Contents

The Australian Government’s priority for migration in 2020-21 is leveraged towards providing support for public health responses, with the aim of bolstering the nation’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This criterion was again evident when the ACT recently released its Critical Skills List for the Skilled Work Regional (provisional) subclass 491 visa and the Skilled Nominated (permanent) subclass 190 visa, in which it showed clear focus upon applicants considered critical to both, health and economic recoveries.

Skills considered included individuals providing crucial or specialist medical services, those with unique skills required in order to maintain supply of essential goods and services plus persons who are able to deliver services in sectors considered critical to Australia’s economic recovery.

Separate invitation rounds will be held for 491 and 190 nomination streams, with the highest ranked candidates in each stream invited to apply for nomination. Ranking may also consider occupation and an invitation may not be issued upon each individual occupation cap becoming fully met.

Still closed for overseas applicants, the Canberra Matrix is open to current Canberra residents only, with the number of places allocated to each occupation range capped for each month.

Possibility of streamlined nomination

The ACT offers streamlined nomination facility for holders of a PHD completed at an ACT university, applicants further benefiting from a simplified process with minimal supporting documentation, priority processing and the removal of the $300 service fee.

How to apply

Prior to applying for ACT nomination, interested parties would need to complete the Department of Home Affairs (Home Affairs) SKILLSELECT (http://homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skillselect) and meet the Home Affairs points test (which currently sits at 65 points).

Applying for ACT nomination then becomes a two stage process; firstly an expression of interest then, upon receipt of an invitation, a formal online application.
