IMMIGRATION NEWS – Victorian visa nomination program update

Table of Contents

On Monday August 17th the Victorian Government, through its Skilled and Business Migration Program, released the following statement pertaining to the current status of its visa nomination program:

“The Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs has provided a limited number of visa nomination places to the Victorian Government, up until the Federal Budget is delivered on 6th October 2020.

“We are preparing to re-open with new policies and nomination criteria to support Victoria’s economic recovery and the public health response.

“You may wish to prepare your Expression of Interest (EOI) so that you’re ready, once more information becomes available. EOI’s are lodged through the Department of Home Affairs SkillSelect system.

Please ensure that your EOI is up to date before you lodge an application with the Victorian Government.”

What will be ‘new policies and nomination criteria’?

Whilst these are yet to be disclosed it is widely anticipated that, in keeping with trends in other states, initial priorities will favour applicants in occupations critical to the coronavirus response – medical workers, infrastructure and affiliated fields – and particularly to those who are currently onshore.

When will additional places become available?

It is unlikely that this will be known until after the Federal Budget is handed down, on October 6th 2020. Obviously, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no allocations were provided at the end of the 2019-2020 financial year but that does not preclude places becoming available prior to the end of the current fiscal year.

It is quite apparent however, that the Federal Government will make its decisions in the very best interests of Australia’s social and economic recovery.

Time spent wisely can often work in your favour

Although inconvenient, given the world’s current issues, delays are largely understandable but they can also serve a constructive purpose.

One worthwhile tip; using the time wisely, potential applicants can improve their English skills. Elevating from “Proficient” to “Superior” gains a significant 10 points and with it a great deal of additional attention from decision-makers.
