VETASSESS Updates Skills Assessment Criteria for Hospitality Managers

Endorsed by Australian Hotels Association for Migration to Australia

VETASSESS has reviewed and updated its skills assessment criteria for two occupations relating to accommodation and hospitality management, following consultation with the Australian Hotels Association (AHA).

Australian Hotels Association Manager Workplace Relations and Culture Peter Wade said serviced apartments are becoming more prominent in the industry, particularly with longer-stay travellers who like the convenience of a kitchen and laundry.

They can range from a basic service to luxury apartments offering 5-star amenities.

In the context of serviced apartments for the occupation of Hotel or Motel Manager, the applicant must be responsible for all aspects of the serviced apartment’s operation, as well as demonstrating knowledge and experience in the following:

  1. An awareness of, and interaction with, body corporate legislation, when applicable.
  2. Demonstrated experience in liaising with numerous individual apartment owners, when applicable.

“Sometimes each apartment is owned by a different investor, so the general manager not only has the management company to deal with, but potentially deals with every individual owner to ensure they remain part of the pool for onselling the accommodation,” said Mr Wade.

To be considered for this occupation, the applicant must be responsible for the management of all divisions or aspects of a motel or hotel’s operations, including housekeeping, security, food and beverage, and accounting and purchasing activities. Mr Wade said the value of having updated criteria and clear processes for assessment was that international accommodation chains could plan staff transfers.
