Important Clarification for Lebanese Nationals and Their Families Regarding DFAT and DOHA Assistance

As the CEO of Sellanes Clark Immigration Law Specialists, I am addressing the growing confusion among Lebanese nationals in Australia and overseas regarding the support being provided by the Australian Government through DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and DOHA (Department of Home Affairs). This message is critical for Lebanese Australians and their families in light of recent events in Lebanon.

The Australian Government is working tirelessly to assist Australians, permanent residents, and their immediate family members in departing Lebanon safely. This includes two charter flights, scheduled to depart Beirut for Larnaca, Cyprus, as part of the Albanese Government’s response to the escalating situation. These flights are free-of-charge and prioritize vulnerable individuals. However, they are only available to those who hold Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or have immediate family members with entry rights into Australia.

Here are key points to keep in mind:

  1. Government-Supported Flights: The Australian Government has secured seats on various flights out of Lebanon, including the upcoming charters to Cyprus. Additionally, further flights are planned, subject to demand and operational constraints. These flights are offered to assist Australians in Lebanon who wish to return home. However, availability is based on the operational status of Beirut Airport and other logistical challenges.
  2. Registration is Crucial: Lebanese Australians and their families who wish to leave Lebanon must register with DFAT’s Crisis Portal or contact the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre. DFAT is facilitating these assisted-departure flights for registered individuals, and updates will be provided directly to them. Registering is the first essential step to ensuring you are part of these efforts.
  3. No Government-Assisted Visas or Special Immigration Programs: There has been some misunderstanding about the role of the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) in this situation. It is important to clarify that DOHA is not currently offering any special visa or immigration programs for Lebanese nationals. The assistance provided is primarily focused on facilitating the departure of Australians, permanent residents, and their immediate family members from Lebanon.
  4. Take Immediate Action: The Australian Government’s message to Australians in Lebanon is clear: Now is the time to leave. There is no guarantee that additional flights will continue or that individuals will be able to choose preferred flight times. It is crucial to take the first available flight to ensure safe departure.

We understand that many in the Lebanese community are looking for clarity during these challenging times. Our firm is committed to providing support where we can, but it is vital that families and individuals take the necessary steps to secure government assistance by following the outlined protocols.
