NEWSFLASH : WORK LIMITATIONS FOR STUDENT VISA HOLDERS REMOVED

The Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, announced the federal government will remove the 40-hour-a-fortnight cap on student visa-holder workers.

This will mean no restrictions on the number of hours they can work, allowing foreign students to pick up more hours to help alleviate worker shortages, as more people are forced into isolation due to Australia’s Omicron COVID-19 outbreak. However, whilst the announcement has been made, there is still no legislation changes to support this at this time.

Current feedback is that international students and employers have welcomed the decision. However, the news has been met with a lukewarm response by the Council of International Students Australia (CISA), due to the effect it may have on student’s abilities to meet their academic obligations and the added potential for greater exposure to catching COVID-19.

Therefore, it is now a matter of waiting to see effects of these ongoing changes.
